The giant khachkars of Abrenk monastery
The photograph shows the khachkars of the monastery of Saint David, or Abrenk, in the village of Uchpinar in the historical province of Erznka (Erzincan), Western Armenia. Although the monastery suffered much destruction, the church, a chapel and these khachkars have survived; they are considered among the largest in the region.
The two tall, narrow khachkars stand in an open, snow-covered area. They are carved with crosses and interlaced ornament. The khachkars bear Armenian inscriptions and are dated to 1191 and 1194.
