Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator in Ani
The photograph shows the Armenian Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator in Ani, one of the important monuments of medieval architecture. The church is seen through a ruined arch. Fragments of wall paintings survive on the inner surface of the arch and on the church façade. One person stands near the entrance.
Ani was a major spiritual, cultural and economic centre of the Armenian kingdom. The architectural forms of the church and its surviving wall paintings testify to the high development of Armenian Christian art.
