Khachkar on Aghtamar Island

This khachkar stands on Aghtamar Island in Lake Van, in Western Armenia. The source dates it to 915–921. This period coincides with the flourishing of the Kingdom of Vaspurakan and the construction of the Church of the Holy Cross.

The khachkar stands on grassy ground. In the centre is a cross surrounded by spiral patterns, with a round ornament below. The surface of the stone is partly covered with reddish-orange lichen. Water can be seen in the distance at the left edge.

The fine ornament carved on the khachkar testifies to the talent of medieval Armenian masters. For centuries it has withstood time and the trials of nature.
