Khndzoresk

Khndzoresk is a village in the eastern part of Armenia’s Syunik Province. It is mentioned as early as Stepanos Orbelyan. According to a 13th-century tax list, the village paid 10 drams in tax to Tatev Monastery. The village took an active part in the liberation struggle of Davit Bek, and in 1728–1730 the troops of Mkhitar Sparapet were based in the Khndzoresk fortress.

According to Catholicos Abraham Kretatsi, who visited the village in 1735, the caves served both as dwellings and as shelters, and residents climbed with ropes to houses 20–30 m high. In 1913 the village had 27 shops and 7 schools.

The picture shows caves in the cliffs, pointed rocks, green slopes, ruined buildings and, below, a stone church with a grass-covered roof.
