The Armenian community of Singapore
The photograph shows the Armenians of Singapore, a small community with an outsized influence. Between 1820 and 2000 only about 700 Armenians lived in Singapore. Most of them stayed only temporarily; only about 12 families settled permanently, over three generations.
Despite their small numbers, the Armenians of Singapore left a notable mark on the country’s history, economy and culture. They worked in trade, banking, education and charity, and founded schools and organisations.
Several dozen people, from children to the elderly, are gathered in front of a doorway topped with a cross; in the centre stands a clergyman in white.
