The Ter Isahakyan family near Gandzak
The photograph dates from the end of the 19th century and shows the Armenian family of Stepan Ter Isahakyan near the city of Gandzak (Ganja). There are 5 people in the picture: 2 women, 2 children and an old bearded man. A small child in a white dress sits on the lap of the seated woman.
The boy standing on the left later became Soviet naval admiral Hovhannes Isahakyan, who is remembered in history as the only non-Russian admiral of the Soviet Union. This family embodies the formation of an educated Armenian milieu in the Caucasus and the contribution of Armenians to the all-Union state system.
