Armenak Kuchukyan's shop in Alexandria

In 1935 Alexandria had many businesses that reflected the cultural diversity of the region. One of them was the grocery “Bakalat al-Khawaja Armenak Kuchukyan”, run by Armenak Kuchukyan and his children. The family came from Armenia and had settled in Egypt in the 19th century.

The photograph shows the shop front with glass display windows. The main sign reads “Armenak Kuchukyan & Sons” in French and Arabic, and the upper sign repeats the name with the word “Alexandria”. A few people stand on the pavement, and tram tracks run along the street.
