Armenian Women Weaving a Carpet in Aleppo
The photograph shows Armenian women weaving a carpet in the city of Aleppo, Syria. After the Genocide, Aleppo became an important centre for Western Armenian refugees, where national crafts, the language and the culture were preserved.
Two women sitting on low stools work at a carpet loom, while a third stands beside them. Bundles of yarn hang on the loom, and a finished patterned carpet hangs above it.
Carpet weaving is one of the most ancient crafts of the Armenian people, passed down from generation to generation mainly through women. The photograph bears witness to the work, creativity and resilience of Armenian women in the diaspora.
