The Armenian cemetery of Jugha

The Armenian cemetery of Jugha lies near the town of Old Jugha (Julfa) in Nakhijevan (Nakhchivan), which is part of Azerbaijan. Originally there were about 10,000 gravestones here.

According to the Encyclopædia Iranica, Jugha is an ancient village in historical Armenia, part of the historical region of Syunik. According to legend, Jugha was founded by the legendary Armenian king Tigran Yervanduni, who lived in the 6th century BC.

The photograph shows khachkars with carved crosses, a ram-shaped gravestone in front and a mountain behind.
