Ornate Armenian gold box

This ornate box is an example of traditional Armenian jewellery. According to the source, it is made of gold using the techniques of filigree (delicate patterns of fine wire) and granulation (patterns of tiny metal balls). These techniques are characteristic of Armenian jewellers, especially the masters of Van and other centres of Western Armenia. Such objects reflect the high skill of Armenian jewellers, whose work has been valued for centuries.

The lid is round, with a turquoise stone in the centre, around which patterns of coiled wire and granules radiate outwards. The lid is attached with a hinge, beside which there is a ring. The side wall of the box bears engraved patterns.
