Haghartsin monastic complex
Haghartsin is a renowned medieval monastic complex in the Tavush Province, about 18 km from Dilijan, in a forested valley. It was built in the 11th–13th centuries. The oldest structure is the 11th-century Church of Saint Gregory, with an octagonal drum. The main church, Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), was built in 1281, and its sixteen-sided dome is decorated with a delicate arcade. The Church of Saint Stephen was built in 1244 and the refectory in 1248.
According to the source, the refectory housed the burial place of the Bagratuni royal house, where tombstones bearing the names of Kings Smbat and Gagik have survived. In the second half of the 11th century the monastery was destroyed during Seljuk raids, and it was rebuilt from the second half of the 12th century.
The aerial photograph shows the churches with conical domes standing among the forest, arched ruins and visitors walking in the courtyard.
