Calouste Gulbenkian Library in Jerusalem
The Calouste Gulbenkian Library is located in the Armenian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, on the grounds of the Armenian Patriarchate. It is regarded as one of the most important Armenian intellectual centres in the world and is one of the Patriarchate’s five intellectual centres.
The library opened in 1932, funded by the benefactor Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian in memory of his parents. Its holdings include about 120,000 specialised volumes, some 4,000 manuscripts and early printed books, many of them dating from the 12th–13th centuries. It is the most significant library of the Armenian diaspora.
