Hovhannes Tumanyan with his family
Hovhannes Tumanyan, son of Tadevos (1869–1923), the great Armenian poet, writer and public figure, surrounded by his large family. Tumanyan was married to Olga Machkalyan, and they had 10 children: 4 sons and 6 daughters. The photograph was probably taken in his home, possibly in Tiflis (Tbilisi), where the family lived for a long time.
Tumanyan is known not only for his literary legacy of poems, fairy tales and fables, but also for his public work, especially his help to Armenian refugees and orphans during the Armenian Genocide.
The bearded Tumanyan stands in the centre in front of an open door, surrounded by children of different ages.
