An Armenian immigrant family in the United States

The photograph shows an Armenian immigrant family newly arrived in the United States in the early 20th century. There are 9 people in the frame: a man and a woman seated in front, an infant on the man’s lap, two children standing at their sides, and behind them a boy, two women and a man. Several of them wear a fez or an embroidered cap. The flag of the United States hangs on the wall behind.

In those years thousands of Armenians were forced to leave their homes. Having passed through the hard road of wars and migration, they sought, under the flag of a new country, to build a safe future for their children while preserving their language, faith and national identity.
