A street in Leninakan, 1925
The photograph shows one of the streets of Leninakan (Gyumri). The stone houses, some of them half-ruined, the empty wide road and the churches visible in the distance convey the peaceful daily life of the city in the first quarter of the 20th century. On the left, near the houses, a rider, another man beside a horse and, further off, a few passers-by can be seen.
The photograph was taken in 1925 by the Norwegian humanitarian Fridtjof Nansen in the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, and today it is an important documentary source for the history of the city of Gyumri.
