Armenian Carpet Weaving
Armenian carpets. Carpet weaving is a traditional Armenian craft with a history of thousands of years. Armenian carpets were made of high-quality wool and dyed with natural dyes, especially vordan karmir, a red dye obtained from an insect. In Armenia today carpets are still woven with almost the same methods, patterns and colours as in ancient times.
Among the symbols of Armenian carpets are the wheel of eternity, the cross, the dragon (dragon carpet), squares, Armenian letters, as well as flowers and animals (eagle carpet, serpent carpet).
The photograph shows a hand passing thread through the stretched threads of a carpet being woven. The carpet has red, white, black and blue geometric patterns.
