The Ghazir rug
The Ghazir rug was woven by Armenian orphans of the orphanage in Ghazir, Syria (now Lebanon). In 1925 it was presented to US President Calvin Coolidge for the help given to the victims of the Armenian Genocide.
The rug symbolises the gardens of paradise, consists of 4 million knots and was woven by hand over 18 months.
In the photograph the rug hangs over a wall. A group of girls and a man in a hat hold it from above. Another rug can be seen on the left.
