The temple of Garni

The temple of Garni is an ancient temple in Armenia, built in the 1st century AD by the Armenian king Trdat I. It stands 28 km from Yerevan, in Kotayk Province, in the valley of the Azat River, near the village of Garni, within the Garni fortress.

The temple was destroyed by the earthquake of 1679 and rebuilt from its ruins in the 1970s.

In the photograph the colonnaded temple stands on a high podium approached by wide steps. In front of it are the surviving foundations of other buildings, with mountains in the background.
