The Vardan Mamikonian oak near Aknaghbyur
The photograph shows the oak known by the name of Vardan Mamikonian, which stood near the village of Aknaghbyur and was considered one of the oldest trees in the world. About 15 men of different ages have gathered on and around the huge trunk and roots; several of them are white-bearded elders with walking sticks. A large hollow opens beneath the roots. The photograph is tinted.
According to tradition, the tree was planted by Vardan Mamikonian himself before the Battle of Avarayr, on 26 May 451. Over the centuries the oak became a symbol of national memory. After a lightning strike the tree fell.
