Khachkar at the Haghartsin monastery
This khachkar stands in the Haghartsin monastic complex near Dilijan, in the Tavush region of Armenia. It is dated to the 11th–13th centuries. Haghartsin is one of the most notable centres of Armenian medieval architecture.
In the centre of the rectangular stone, beneath an arch, a large cross is carved, with smaller crosses on either side of its lower part and a semicircular ornament below. The edges are decorated with interlaced bands; the stone is covered with lichen, and trees surround it. The cross and ornaments symbolise the eternity of life and the millennia-old Christian faith of the Armenian people.
