Armenian woman from Zangezur, 1931
The photograph shows an Armenian woman from Zangezur. It was taken in 1931 and is part of ethnographer Stepan Lisitsian's photographic collection “Armenians in Zangezur”.
The seated woman wears the local traditional costume: a dark veil covering her head and shoulders, with an ornament on her forehead. Her mouth and chin are covered with a white cloth. Beneath a long fur-trimmed outer garment a belt and a long dark dress can be seen. There is a rug under her feet and a painted landscape behind her. At the bottom there is an inscription in decorative Armenian letters.
According to the source, such photographs have preserved an important memory of Armenian regional traditions and everyday life.
