Village children of Zeitun, c. 1900
The photograph shows village children of Zeitun. It was taken around 1900 in the Ottoman Empire.
On a hillside, in front of flat-roofed houses, several dozen children stand with a few adults behind them. Most of the children wear long shirts of striped or flower-patterned fabric; some wear caps, and some are barefoot.
According to the source, the children wear traditional Armenian clothing of hand-woven cloth, tied with a loose belt. Some of the boys also wore traditional wide trousers, shalvar.
