Women and children from Van in Iran

The photograph shows Armenian women and children who came from Van. It was taken in 1928 in the settlement of Yame in Iran. After the Armenian Genocide many Armenians of Van were forced to leave their native city, and many of them found refuge in Iran and other countries. Despite hardships, they managed to preserve their families and community.

The picture shows 12 women and 2 children in front of a tent and a wall. Some of the women are seated, others standing; several wear headscarves or caps. In the centre one woman holds a small child in a bonnet, and on the right one of the seated women holds a walking stick.
