The Malkhasyan family in Tigranakert (Diyarbakır), 1911
The photograph shows the Malkhasyan family in the city of Tigranakert (Diyarbakır). It was taken in 1911. There are 8 people in the picture, the parents and their children: an elderly man with prayer beads in his hand sits on the left, an elderly woman on the right, a boy sits in the centre, 4 young women stand behind, and a little girl with a basket stands on the right.
During the Armenian Genocide only 3 of the people in the photograph managed to survive: the seated boy, Harutyun Malkhasyan; the little girl standing on the right, Multach “Florence” Malkhasyan; and the young woman standing on the left, Arek. This photograph is a reminder of the thousands of Armenian families destroyed during the Genocide.
