Ruined building and cemetery in Karin (Erzurum)

The photograph shows the remains of a ruined Armenian church and cemetery in Karin (Erzurum). The round building is covered with a conical stone dome; there are arched windows in the upper part, the carved band in the middle section is damaged, and the lower part has arched niches. Standing and fallen gravestones surround it.

Karin (Erzurum) is a city in historical Western Armenia that received its present name in the 11th century. In the mid-11th century the Seljuks destroyed the nearby old Armenian town of Artsn, and its inhabitants took refuge in Karin. The city was then called Artsn-Rum, meaning “Artsn of the Romans”.
