An Armenian khachkar in the Vatican, 1246
The picture shows a unique Armenian khachkar made of white marble. It is dated 1246 and is regarded as an exceptional example of Armenian stone art. In the centre is a large cross with interlaced ornament, surrounded by smaller crosses, and Armenian letters are carved over the surface. At the bottom there is a short Latin inscription.
The khachkar was discovered in the 17th century in the Vatican, in the area next to St Peter's Square. Centuries later it was included in the permanent display of the gallery of Pope Urban VIII, near the Sistine Chapel. It bears witness to the early presence, faith and cultural trace of Armenians in Rome.
