The Karahunj observatory near Sisian
Three kilometres from the town of Sisian lies evidence of the most ancient astronomical culture in Armenia: the Karahunj stone observatory. It consists of hundreds of large upright stones with neatly made through-holes, arranged in a definite order over an area of 3 hectares.
The photograph, taken from above, shows rows of standing stones, stone heaps and paths running between them, with a ploughed field at the top.
