Ashot Msaker Bagratuni
Ashot Msaker was a member of the Bagratuni dynasty, active in the late 8th and early 9th centuries. He came from a noble family that had kept its military and political influence in Armenia after the Arab conquests.
As the power of the Abbasid Caliphate weakened, Ashot managed to strengthen his position by combining military force with diplomatic flexibility and relying on the Armenian nobility and Church. He was recognised as ishkhan of ishkhans (“prince of princes”), becoming the first among Armenian rulers under formal vassal dependence on the caliphate. Ashot Msaker did not bear a royal title, but his policy laid the foundations for the rise of the Bagratunis and the restoration of Armenian statehood at the end of the 9th century.
The modern painting shows a bearded man wearing a crown topped by a cross and a red cloak, holding the hilt of a sword.
