The Cathedral of Saint Elias and Saint Gregory the Illuminator in Beirut
The Cathedral of Saint Elias and Saint Gregory the Illuminator stands on Debbas Square in the centre of Beirut, Lebanon, and belongs to the Armenian Catholic Church. It is distinguished by a style inspired by Roman architecture, which differs somewhat from traditional Armenian architecture.
The first church on this site was built in 1860; it was later demolished and rebuilt to hold more worshippers. Construction of the present cathedral was completed in 1959. The building was badly damaged during the Lebanese Civil War but was restored after 1990.
The modern photograph shows the light-coloured stone cathedral with red tiled roofs, a dome and a bell tower. Above the entrances are icons.
