St. Hripsime Church in Yalta under snow
The photograph shows the snow-covered Armenian Apostolic Church of St. Hripsime in Yalta. The church stands on a slope among snow-covered conifers, with the town's houses visible behind it. The conical dome rises on a drum with arched windows, and on the right there is a small turret with columns.
The church was built on the slope of Darsan Hill in 1909–1917 in the style of early Christian churches. Its prototype is the Church of St. Hripsime in Etchmiadzin (Vagharshapat). The outer walls are of volcanic tuff with lace-like ornament. The interior decoration was created by the painter V. Ya. Surenyants, who managed to complete only the exterior finishing, the altar and the dome. The church was built with funds from the patron Poghos Ter-Ghukasyan in memory of his daughter, who died young.
