Armenian girl being led to church for her wedding
An image from the early 18th century showing an Armenian wedding tradition: a young girl covered with a veil is escorted to church for her wedding ceremony. The image was created by the French artist Jean-Baptiste Vanmour, documenting the daily life and customs of the Armenian communities of the Ottoman Empire.
This is an engraving. In the centre is the bride, her face covered with a transparent veil and a flat round headpiece on her head. She is escorted on both sides by two women in tall hats, the lower parts of their faces covered, holding handkerchiefs.
Below is a caption in French: “Armenian girl being led to church to be married”.
