Fortress from the time of Tigran the Great on the Tigris
The photograph shows rocks rising from the edge of green water, with tower-like stone structures with openings on them. A pleasure boat is on the water.
This is an ancient Armenian fortress in the Aghdznik province of historical Armenia, from the time of Tigran the Great. The fortress stood on the middle course of the Tigris River, in an important strategic position, guarding the roads and borders.
Aghdznik was one of the important provinces of Greater Armenia. Tigranakert (Diyarbakır), the capital of Greater Armenia, was also located here; under Tigran the Great it had become the political, military and cultural centre of a powerful state.
