Two Armenian Genocide Survivors, Jerusalem
The photograph shows two Armenian women who survived the Armenian Genocide. It was taken in 1922 in Jerusalem, in the years when thousands of Armenians, having lost their homes, families and homeland, found refuge in foreign lands.
The standing woman has her hands behind her head; she wears a dark dress and long necklaces on her chest. The seated woman holds a large clay jug; she wears a light dress with embroidered borders, an ornate headdress with a long veil, and bracelets. The photographer’s stamp is in the lower left corner.
This photograph is a reminder that after the Genocide the Armenian people not only survived but also preserved their dignity, identity and faith in the future.
