Procession of Patriarch Stepan Azaryan, Constantinople, 1899

The photograph shows the procession of the Armenian Patriarch Stepan Azaryan on 20 May 1899 in Constantinople (Istanbul), under the Ottoman Empire.

The narrow street is filled with thousands of people, many of them wearing fezzes. Clergy in white vestments and mitres move through the crowd. People watch the procession from windows and balconies, tram rails run along the street, and on the wall to the right is a poster for performances of “Norma” and “Carmen”.

The image reflects not only a religious ceremony but also the organisation and cohesion of the Armenian community in a difficult historical period. This procession became a symbol of public faith, identity and presence.
