The Yepiskoposyan family from Getashen, 1905
The photograph shows the Yepiskoposyan family from the village of Getashen (formerly Chaykend) in 1905, during their wedding journey. The man is seated, wearing a chokha with cartridge holders and a cross on his chest and holding a fur hat. The woman stands beside him in a long dark dress with a lace collar, her hand on his shoulder.
Getashen lies in the historical province of Artsakh (Northern Artsakh). In the 19th and early 20th centuries it was one of the most populous Armenian villages in the region and belonged to the Elizavetpol Governorate of the Russian Empire. One of the village headmen was Arustam Yepiskoposyan. In 1991, as a result of Operation “Ring”, the Armenian population of the village was deported.
