A couple in traditional Armenian costume

The picture shows people in traditional Armenian costume, the taraz. The taraz is an inseparable part of Armenian culture and symbolises its rich heritage and identity. Traditionally it was made of cotton, wool and silk and decorated with embroidery, beads, coins and other elements indicating a particular region or social status. The women’s costume usually includes a wide dress, the men’s a shirt and trousers.

The couple are holding hands, which may symbolise an engagement rite, a wedding dance or a performance by a dance ensemble. The man’s costume is light-coloured, with green and red embroidered patterns and a fringed sash; the woman wears a dark green velvet dress with gold embroidery, tassels and strings of pearls.
