The Armenian bishop of Zeitun at Easter, 1912
The Armenian bishop of Zeitun. Easter 1912 at the Church of Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) in the Surenian quarter of Zeitun. The bishop wears a tall gilded mitre and vestments with a floral pattern and holds a staff. In front, two boys in white robes hold tall candlesticks with burning candles; behind are clergy and men.
Zeitun was an Armenian town in Mountainous Cilicia that kept its independence for centuries and accepted the authority of the Ottoman sultan only in 1865. In the following decades the town suffered massacres; in 1915 its remaining inhabitants were deported and exterminated, and after the last massacre in 1921 nothing was left of the town or its people. In 1923 Zeitun was renamed Süleymanlı.
