Ruins of the Armenian quarter of Shushi after the massacre of 1920.
According to the source, on 22 March 1920 the authorities of Azerbaijan, together with the regular Turkish army, began the massacre of the Armenian population of Shushi, almost completely destroying the historic capital of Artsakh. The source regards it as the first manifestation of a policy of conquest against Artsakh, continued by the pogroms and ethnic cleansing from 1988 and by the occupation of Shushi in 2020.
The photograph shows roofless, ruined houses with empty window openings. In the distance is a large domed church, with mountains behind. In the right foreground a man sits on the ruins.
